What is Hakuryumon
Not torii gates — these are Hakuryumon, the white gates
済渡寺の境内に連なる白い構造物は、しばしば「白い千本鳥居」と紹介されますが、
正式には白龍門（はくりゅうもん）と呼ばれる「門」です。
神社の鳥居とは由来も意味も異なります。
全部で78基、全長は86メートル。
令和3年（2021年）5月、先代住職の悲願として完成しました。
平安時代に空海（弘法大師）と共に唐から日本に渡来し、
この法曽（ほうそ）の地に陶器製造技術をもたらした「白龍」という人物にちなんで建立されています。
The striking row of white structures at Saidouji Temple is often described online as a “line of white torii gates,” but they are not torii. They are Hakuryumon — literally, the “Gates of the White Dragon.” There are 78 gates spanning 86 meters, completed in May 2021 as the long-cherished wish of the previous head priest. The gates honor Hakuryū, a man who came to Japan from Tang China together with Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) in the early Heian period and introduced the pottery techniques that became Hōso ware to this very land.

The Story of Hakuryū
Who was Hakuryū?
白龍（はくりゅう）は、平安時代に空海（弘法大師）と共に唐から日本に渡来した人物と伝えられています。
弘法大師がこの地・新見市法曽を訪れた際、
白龍は「法曽焼（ほうそやき）」のもとになる陶器製造技術を当地にもたらしました。
1200年前の遥かな技術伝来は、この山深い地に文化と縁をつなぎました。
白龍は今も済渡寺の境内に祀られており、
本堂の脇には白龍の塚と白龍殿が静かに建っています。
先代住職は「済渡寺に眠る偉人・白龍について、その功績が広まって欲しい」と長年願い、
その想いを形にしたのが、78基の白龍門です。
Hakuryū, literally "White Dragon," is said to have crossed from Tang China to Japan together with Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) in the early Heian period.
When Kōbō Daishi visited this remote area of Hōso in present-day Niimi City, Hakuryū brought with him the pottery techniques that would become known as Hōso ware. This transmission of craft, more than 1,200 years ago, wove culture and human bonds into these deep mountains.
Hakuryū is still enshrined within the precincts of Saidouji Temple. Beside the main hall stand the burial mound of Hakuryū and Hakuryū-den, the hall dedicated to him. The 78 white gates were built to fulfill the late head priest's lifelong wish that "the achievements of Hakuryū, the great one who rests at Saidouji, should become widely known."

白龍門をくぐることは、白龍が宿す「諸願成就」「邪気祓い」「幸福招来」の御利益にあずかるとされています。
連なる78基の門を一つずつ抜けていく行為そのものが、心を整え、願いを深める時間となります。
また、済渡寺は子安観音を本尊として安産・子宝祈願の霊場でもあります。
白龍門をくぐってから本堂で安産祈願を受けるという流れは、
参拝者の方々から「特別な体験になった」とのお声を多くいただいております。
Passing through Hakuryumon is believed to invoke the blessings carried by the White Dragon: fulfillment of wishes, protection from evil, and the calling of good fortune. The simple act of walking through 78 gates, one after another, becomes a quiet meditation — a time to settle the heart and deepen one's prayer.
Saidouji Temple also enshrines Koyasu Kannon, the Bodhisattva of safe childbirth and fertility. Many visitors choose to pass through Hakuryumon before receiving safe childbirth prayers in the main hall, and tell us afterward that this sequence made the visit feel especially meaningful.

Hakuryū-den & The Burial Mound
The hall and the burial mound of Hakuryū
境内の本堂脇には、白龍を祀る白龍殿と、その隣に小高い丘のような白龍の塚（白龍のお墓）があります。
白龍殿には「廆障退散（がいしょうたいさん）」と「五芒星（一筆書きの星印）」が掲げられています。これは古来より、魔を祓い、災いを退ける象徴として大切にされてきたものです。1200年の時を超え、今もこの地で参拝者を見守り続けています。
Beside the main hall stand Hakuryū-den, the hall dedicated to the White Dragon, and next to it a small rounded mound — the burial mound of Hakuryū.
Hakuryū-den bears the inscription "Gaishō Taisan" (warding off calamity) together with a five-pointed star drawn in a single stroke. Both have been treasured for centuries as symbols that repel evil and turn away misfortune. Across more than 1,200 years, they continue to watch over visitors who come to this remote mountain temple.

When Hakuryumon shines its brightest
白龍門は四季を通じて表情を変えますが、特に三つの季節が訪れる方々に愛されています。春の枝垂れ桜と夫婦桃、梅雨から初夏の紫陽花11,000株、そして冬の雪化粧。同じ門でありながら、訪れる度に異なる景色を見せてくれます。
Hakuryumon shows a different face in every season. Three in particular are beloved by visitors: weeping cherry and the "Husband-Wife Peach" in spring, 11,000 hydrangeas from the rainy season into early summer, and the white silence of winter snow. Though the gates themselves never change, each visit reveals an entirely new landscape.
